At Birchall Blackburn Law we acknowledge that our success is due to our people. Our trainees are valued members of our teams and we aim to continue to build their careers at Birchall Blackburn Law after qualification. Many of our previous trainees have developed successful careers at the firm and a number of our Partners were previously trainees here.
Our Training Contracts are divided up into four, six month seats in at least three different practice areas, where you will work with people at all levels of the business, including partners, learning through practice and observation.
The experience you gain will be broad, and the responsibility you will be given real. This will help you understand and get a real feel for commercial law in practice. We are meritocratic, and you are recognised for the work you do, not your job title or how long you have been here. Many of our trainees progress very quickly.
Birchall Blackburn Law offers 2 training contracts per year and Trainees may be based at any of our offices across the North West.
What we look for in our trainee solicitors
We receive a large number of applications for training contracts every year. We look for talented graduates with drive and enthusiasm as well as a strong academic record. Applicants should have at least a 2:1 degree level and be able to demonstrate their commitment and dedication.
We look for people who are well organised with excellent attention to detail. Our trainees must also work well as part of a team and show initiative, so we are keen to hear from people with a range of interests and commitments outside of academic study.

What our trainees say about us…
“I would highly recommend Birchall Blackburn to anyone looking to apply for a training contract. The support and encouragement I have received has been second to none. Birchall Blackburn Law provides both the professional and personal guidance and development which is essential to a successful legal career.” Joan (Trainee Solicitor)
“I joined Birchall Blackburn Law as a Paralegal before completing my training contract and qualifying with the firm. I was fortunate enough to work with extremely experienced solicitors and gained invaluable experience in a number of different areas of legal practice. Since I completed my training, I have continued to develop my legal career at Birchall Blackburn Law and now work as a Partner within the Commercial Property department.” Tony (Partner)
“During my training contract I have had lots of client contact and have been given the opportunity to work on a variety of different matters. I learn something new every day and this has provided for a challenging and interesting training contract. Birchall Blackburn is a firm that invests in its trainees and creates an environment for long term career development.” Michelle (Trainee Solicitor)
“It has been a number of years since I called myself a trainee, or ‘Articled Clerk’ as we were known then, but I am still at Birchall Blackburn Law and have enjoyed a very successful career since I joined the firm all those years ago. I do, however, remember that training consisted of a lot of hard work, long hours and a willingness to complete all manner of tasks asked of you (including everything from parking the Partner’s Porsche to driving to Liverpool to ensure he had his emergency passport in time for his flight and staying for late night completion meetings in smoke filled rooms!). I’m pleased to say that our trainees have rather a different experience these days, but they still work hard and receive the high quality of training and development opportunities that Birchall Blackburn Law has always offered.” Michael (Partner)
“As a trainee you are given responsibility at an early stage and will have the opportunity to be involved with some of the most complex cases from the outset. This allows you to truly develop your skills in a challenging but supportive environment. I thoroughly enjoyed my training contract and I am delighted to have been offered a qualified position at Birchall Blackburn Law.” Kelly (Solicitor)
