The short answer is yes! Part of living a happy and comfortable life is planning ahead. It means you can focus on enjoying life now and not worry about tomorrow.
It doesn’t have to take long to make those plans. By simply making a will and a lasting power of attorney, you can ensure that no matter what life throws at you, your wishes are paramount. You choose who is best to act in your interests and you decide who and how your nearest and dearest are provided for.
Should I make a will?
Yes, everyone should make a will. Having a will lets you decide who inherits your possessions and money. It doesn’t take long to make a will. You can talk to our specialist solicitors for free and if you’re happy, you’ll be able to make a will in just two appointments.
Do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows you to choose someone who will be able to make decisions for you if you were no longer able to make them yourself. They are known as attorneys. This person is likely to be a friend or family member who you trust. However, if you don’t have a suitable person to ask, you can ask a professional such as a teacher or solicitor. For extra security, you can choose more than one person to act either together or separately. Whoever you choose, they must only make decisions in your best interests when it comes to your health, housing, care and finances.
There are two types of LPA, a ‘health and welfare’ and another that covers your ‘property and financial affairs’. An LPA can only be made when you still have full mental capacity. So if you do decide to make one, the sooner you do so the better. We recommend that you have both in place as they focus on two separate and distinct areas of your life.
It will give you peace of mind
By having an LPA in place, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your wishes are known and should be honoured and respected. Having all your legal affairs in order gives you the security and reassurance that, even if your circumstances change in the future, you have done all you can to take care of yourself and your loved ones.
Our experienced and approachable private client team can help you put all these plans in place so you can carry on enjoying life.
