North West law firm, Birchall Blackburn Law, has promoted compliance partner, Paul Pickering, to its board of directors.
Paul joined the firm in 1998 and progressed from a newly qualified solicitor to a senior commercial litigation lawyer before taking on the full-time, internal compliance and regulation role in 2008. The 42-year-old’s focus is centred on helping the firm’s people meet and maintain the highest standards of compliance, professional and ethical duties.
The move will see Paul play a more senior role in shaping the vision and growth of Birchall Blackburn Law, which achieved a record turnover of £15million in the last financial year.
Paul said: “As we grow our service lines, staff numbers and client base in a heavily regulated industry, the function of compliance and regulation will naturally grow with it.
“The firm has always had a strong corporate responsibility in respect of compliance and I’m looking forward to embedding this culture as we grow. It’s an important and rewarding job.”
Michael Foxford, senior partner at Birchall Blackburn Law, said: “When we made the decision in 2008 to divert an experienced solicitor away from a role that generated income for the business to focus on compliance, it was almost unique outside of the largest firms.
“We appreciated all those years ago that embedding compliance into every detail of the work that we do not only ensures that our service meets the highest professional and ethical standards, but also enables our staff to focus on their core function in delivering a quality service to our clients.
“Paul has played a key part in helping the firm achieve sustained growth and the directors are delighted to welcome him to the board. The move not only signals just how seriously we take compliance and ethics, but also demonstrates the opportunities available at Birchall Blackburn Law for people who apply skill and dedication.”
