Team Talk: Beth

We spoke to our very own Marketing Executive Beth Kennedy! Here she talks about how she got into marketing, what she gets up to in her spare time and much more…

How did you decide on working in marketing?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer – and content marketing was just the logical way to go. Writing in my day job means I’m less likely to go rusty when it comes to writing in my spare time!

Have you always specialised in marketing?

No! I have a journalistic background. I used to be the Assistant Editor of Ophthalmology Times Europe. It’s kind of like the eye surgeon’s version of the Cosmopolitan but less about fashion and relationships, and more about cataract and refractive surgery. I started off as an editor/journalist for the first four years of my career, but after working for a digital marketing agency I realised I enjoyed all aspects of marketing (from search engine optimisation to writing press releases!).

So, why Birchall Blackburn Law?

I was a full-time freelance writer for two years before I joined Birchall Blackburn Law. It just so happened that the majority of my clients were either from the law or financial services. I enjoyed working in the legal sector so much, I told myself that if I saw a marketing job for a law firm in Chester I would go for it.

What’s the most rewarding part of your career?

Helping charities in any way that I can. As part of the marketing team, I get to be involved in lots of amazing fundraising activities and, as a result, I’ve met so many wonderful people!

Have you got any sports or hobbies?

I’m a big fan of the Lionesses (England women’s football team). Luckily, Prenton Park stadium host a lot of their home games, which is only a short drive from my house. I’ve met the team a few times, including my favourite player Ellen White – England Women’s top goal scorer last World Cup! I also love writing plays – I’ve had some pieces performed as part of Chester’s Open Air Theatre season, Chester Little Theatre, Chester Microplays and, very soon, the Liverpool Everyman. I’m also an avid gamer – especially retro consoles like NES, N64 and MS-DOS games!

What’s your favourite food?

Can’t choose between baked Camembert and crusty tiger bread or Dr Oetker’s Funghi pizza.

What type of music do you listen to?

Genuinely everything! But if I had to choose just one genre at the moment, it’d be grunge! Stuff like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Hole, Babes in Toyland, Bikini Kill and so on.

Do you have a favourite book?

The first Adrian Mole book. I remember borrowing it from the library as a child and I became hooked on Sue Townsend’s books forever.

What’s something you’re most proud of?

I won an air guitar competition in 2005.

Do you prefer summer or winter?

Winter – less eczema and hay fever.

Is there something you can’t live without?

Animals! I just love them all (even the scary ones). If I was a bit better at science, I would have loved to be a zookeeper.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

To be able to talk to animals (and for them to talk to me back haha)
