We spoke to Kallen Jenkin, who completed some work experience with the conveyancing team in Manchester this year! He talks about how he got the placement, which aspects of law he finds the most interesting, his love for football and much more. He also wrote a lovely blog on his time at Birchall Blackburn Law – check it out here!
Tell us a little about your background, Kallen
I grew up in a small village in Derbyshire and left school in 2004 at 15 with no idea of what I wanted to do in life. I moved to Lancashire in 2013 and after various jobs (including a postman!) began my journey into law in 2017.
How did you get a placement with us?
I got my placement by speed pitching to Michelle Heywood at UCLan’s cJAM event where I had 8 minutes to convince Michelle that I deserved a placement.
Well done – it obviously worked! And how would you describe your placement in three words?
Educational, fun & inspiring
Brilliant! So, seeing as it went very well – what was the most rewarding part of your placement?
Being paid to learn! Especially with my age, I have rent/bills and a 3 year old to pay for so this was very rewarding. Not many firms offer paid placements so well done Birchall Blackburn!
We know you spent a lot of time with the conveyancing team, but what area of law do you find the most interesting?
This has changed multiple times since I began my degree. Currently I would say the law relating to children and personal injury.
Great stuff. What are your career plans for the future? Are you looking at a career in law or something completely different?
After finishing the LLB I plan to complete the LPC/LLM and begin a training contract within a solicitor’s firm. Once qualified my goal is to one day become a partner.
Outside of work, do you have any hobbies or sports you like to play?
I am a huge Manchester United fan, I have a season ticket at Old Trafford. I also love playing football, guitar and spending time with my family.
What’s your favourite food?
What type of music do you listen to?
Anything from Sam Cooke to Motorhead
What’s your favourite book?
Fiction – The Shining by Stephen King
Non-Fiction Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi
What’s something (or someone!) you’re most proud of?
My son Bailey who continues to surprise everyday
Is there something you can’t live without?
I would like to say football but my partner won’t thank me for it!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Ability to absorb and recall any information I witness. Mainly because my memory is terrible and I have exams coming up!
