Our Personal and Serious Injury team are always working hard to help people – from slips, trips, falls, accidents at work through to life changing injuries and often during some of the most difficult times of their lives. But our brilliant Personal Injury Paralegal Mahima Mahzabin, was kind enough to sit down and have a quick chat all about why she chose to work at Birchall Blackburn Law, her love for cricket and the person who inspires her the most…
Q: What inspired you to work in law?
My uncle is actually a judge at a civil court in Bangladesh! I also chose law as my career because I did it in college. I found it interesting and I can see myself in this career for a long time.
Q: Why did you choose to specialise in personal injury?
I tried a few different areas in conveyancing, as a trainee conveyancer for three months…I didn’t like it that much so I switched to personal injury instead. Every personal injury case is different – it’s challenging and every day is different.
Q: Why Birchall Blackburn Law?
I wanted to get into claimant work, because I was doing defendant work for DWF in Spinningfields. I wanted to see if I preferred the claimant side of things. So I started to look up law firms in Manchester and Birchall Blackburn Law appeared. I really wanted to work for a more tight-knit firm.
Q: How do you cope with the emotional nature of personal injury?
I haven’t dealt with any fatality claims or terminal illness, as I work in fast track claims of up to £25K. So I deal with straightforward fractures and such. But when I come across a personal injury involving a minor…it can be emotional talking with the parents. I try to talk to my clients as if we’re having an informal chat – I try not to be rigid or formal and I always want to make them feel comfortable.
Q: What’s your favourite thing about your job?
It never feels like ‘work’ – it just feels like I’m helping people get what they need.
Q: Any favourite sports or hobbies?
I love watching cricket. I was born and brought up in Asia and cricket is almost like another religion out there. I used to watch Man United matches…but I love international football matches and, of course, the World Cup!
Q: What’s your favourite food?
My favourite cuisine is Thai…anything Thai!
Q: What kind of music do you listen to?
I don’t have a specific genre, I don’t categorise music..I listen to what I like whenever I feel like it!
Q: Have you got a favourite book?
Harry Potter! My sister introduced me to the books.
Q: Favourite film?
Any Marvel movies!
Q: Who or what inspires you?
My dad inspires me, to be honest. He’s always giving me the freedom to do what I want and he always back me up. I told my dad I left my job and he has always supported me in whatever I want to do.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A good person, more than anything else.
Q: Have you got any unusual facts?
As well as English, I speak three languages fluently – Bengali, Hindi and Urdu.
Q: What’s the biggest misconception about lawyers/solicitors that you’ve heard?
That we’re always after money and that we lie! We definitely don’t lie. We look at a case and we try to present it in accordance with the law.
Q: What is something you can’t live without?
My family because I can be a really homesick person.
Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Flying – so I could commute to work. I don’t want to read people’s minds…I don’t want to know if they’re thinking anything bad about me!
