We spoke to Hanna Smith, Associate Solicitor for the Specialist & Commercial Property team in Preston! She told us all about her love for sports, music festivals and much more!
How did you decide on working in law?
From a young age I was interested in property development and architecture, so sought a career involving property. Having undertaken work experience in various industries, mock trials and a 3 month summer placement in a conveyancing department, I was particularly interested in pursuing a career in law. I completed the LPC in 2015 and began training as a Solicitor at Birchall Blackburn shortly after.
Have you always specialised in property law?
During university I worked part-time in a conveyancing team, then as a legal helpline advisor during my LPC (advising clients on all areas of law). When I joined Birchall Blackburn in 2015 I started in the Post-Completions Team, then moved to Specialist and Commercial Property in 2017.
Why Birchall Blackburn Law?
I have always been keen to live and work in the North West, so was looking to train at a regional rather than national firm. At the interview it was evident that the firm offered great opportunities for progression and I was particularly interested in the variety of property work undertaken.
What’s the most rewarding part of your career?
Working hard to meet deadlines for clients, which may have seemed unachievable at the start of the transaction. I also enjoy picking up cases that other firms are unable to deal with due to technical legal issues, and providing solutions to problems that have arisen.
Have you got any sports or hobbies?
I used to play Squash for Lancashire and I am now the chairman for Leyland Squash Club.
What’s your favourite food?
What type of music do you listen to?
Most types, I love going to see live bands and have been to quite a few festivals.
Do you have a favourite book?
I recently read the Secret Barrister and couldn’t put it down! John Grisham is my favourite author.
What’s something you’re most proud of?
Completing a marathon in May 2019, despite injuring my knee a few weeks before.
Do you prefer summer or winter?
Summer, as I don’t like the dark nights or cold weather in winter.
Is there something you can’t live without?
Family, friends and the weekends!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
The power to speak any language (which I believe is known as Omnilingualism) because I love going on holiday.
