Nick Bennetts, part of the Specialist Property Support team in Preston (soon to be trainee solicitor!) was kind enough to take half an hour out of his day to catch up with us. We talked to Nick all about how he came to be working at BBLaw, his love for the F1, his eclectic music tastes and much more!
How did you decide on working in specialist property?
I was always keen on doing property law in a professional setting and the varied and challenging work in Specialist Property really appeals to me. It is not just straightforward residential conveyancing, there is always something different to do in Specialist Property. I enjoyed learning about property law when I was an undergraduate at the University of Chester and I also studied Advanced Real Estate as an elective on my LPC, where I earned a Distinction grade for the module.
Have you always specialised in specialist property?
Not always. I joined Birchall Blackburn Law’s Specialist Property department in October 2018. Beforehand, I used to work at Slater & Gordon Lawyers in Manchester as a helpline legal adviser for Trade Union members. I provided legal advice on numerous areas of law, such as employment, family, wills & probate, civil/criminal litigation and property law. I broadened my legal knowledge as an adviser, but the role was very demanding. I had to work on-call shifts, which really wasn’t for me. I often got woken up by calls between 3am-7am from people wanting legal advice!
Wow! So, why Birchall Blackburn Law?
I wanted a fresh start because I knew that I was capable of being more than just a helpline legal adviser. I wanted to kick-start my legal career at a well-established, regional firm by doing an area of law that I am interested in. I enjoy the variety of work available in Specialist Property. I really enjoy being a member of the team and how well Specialist Property work together as a unit. The firm itself treats you as a person rather than a number, as well.
What’s the most rewarding part of your career?
Being able to put into practice what I have learned during my law degree and LPC and applying it to help others. It is satisfying when your hard work on a matter pays off and you help clients all the way through a transaction. I really like getting positive feedback from clients, especially when they have felt at ease during a property matter.
Have you got any sports or hobbies?
Spending time with family and socialising with friends. I have an avid interest in music and like going to live performances from time to time. I have two black Labradors and I like taking them on long walks. I don’t do many sports, but I sometimes do swimming in my spare time and I try to keep healthy and exercise. I also like karting with friends and I’ve been a fan of F1 for almost two decades.
What’s your favourite food?
Italian food and Indian food. I love curries.
What type of music do you listen to?
I love music. It really depends because I listen to quite a lot of genres; from indie/ alternative rock to electronic music, from pop & RnB to more experimental genres. I like listening to albums and I always keep an eye out for new releases on Fridays to see what’s worth listening to.
Do you have a favourite book?
IT by Stephen King. I read a lot of Stephen King’s books growing up!
What’s something you’re most proud of?
In May 2019, I secured a Training Contract with Birchall Blackburn Law after only working at the firm for seven months! I am very proud of the achievement and a lot of hours’ research and work went into my presentation for the interview. I will become a trainee solicitor here in March 2020. I am really looking forward to the new challenge next year and what I can learn and achieve moving forward.
Do you prefer summer or winter?
Winter. I am one of those odd people who likes bleak, cold weather and dark mornings & nights. I can’t really cope with weather over 20 celsius.
Is there something you can’t live without?
Music. I don’t think there is a day that goes by where I don’t listen to music.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
To be able to fly or teleport.
